Biography
Selina Sand, born in 1980 and based in Helsinki, graduated as a visual artist in 2025. Sand has been exhibiting actively in recent times, and since 2025 also internationally. Inspired by various art forms and styles, including classical art and contemporary abstract art, Sand’s practice consists of painting and drawing with mixed media, especially with the mediums of oil and acrylic paint, and charcoal.
Artist statement
My artistic practice is rooted in the inner reality of the human being and its relationship with the surrounding world. I am interested in identity, silence, uncertainty, and experiences that are difficult to put into words. In my work I seek moments of mystery and beauty while exploring the emotional dimensions of human experience and the fleeting nature of life.
I work with charcoal, graphite, acrylic and oil paints, often combining them in mixed media works. My paintings move between figurative and abstract expression, bringing together layered materials and the tension between chaos and order. The human figure often acts as a carrier of experience — a representation of presence, transformation and disappearance.
My process often begins intuitively. I build the image layer by layer, concealing and revealing. Colour, surface and material are not only visual elements for me, but also embodied experiences. Color constructs space and atmosphere but also functions as physical mass and surface. The meaning of a painting arises not only from what is depicted but also from the experience of viewing the work.
